Virginia State University
Farmer to Farmer Program

The Virginia State University Farmer-to-Farmer program provides professional agricultural and techical assistance via volunteers to four countries: Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia and Eritrea.

The program is administered by Virginia State University, in Petersburg, Virginia.

The Farmer-to-Farmer program began with the US Farm Bill in 1985. The goals of the Farmer-to-Farmer program is to provide professional specialists in agriculture, agri-business, processing, science and techology as well as trainers to host organizations that want to improve the capacity of farmers and rural industries, promote sustainable agriculture, create an environment for technology transfer to reduce poverty and hunger, bridge the knowledge gap by providing agriculture trainers to educate farmers, extension agents, agriculture instructors and agriculture processors, link producers to local and regional markets.

Virginia State University's Agricultural Research Department received a Farmer-to-Farmer grant from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in 2003. VSU administers this 5 year grant. To date, 2006, the Farmer-to-Farmer program has implemented projects using 10,000 volunters world wide.

The program pays for all the costs associated with the project, but does not pay a salary for the volunteer. The potential volunteer must be an American citizen and hold an American passport.
